Drepanocitosys Project

The project can exist thanks to the opportunity of having very exceptional data:

In Sicily, the drepanocitosys is more common than in the rest of Europe.
It is a hereditary blood disease consisting of an alteration of red globules with a consequent increase of the blood stickiness.

Hence, the appearance of obstructions in the micro circle.
When some ocular complications arise in the retina level, the patients present a high ocular disability which could lead to blindness. Thanks to the Nest technology, we are able to study the retina alterations in a homogeneous range of patients suffering from drepanocitosys. Our aim is to provide a new rating of risk which makes the application of a proper therapy possible, in order to prevent more serious complications.
